Beer, Beer, Beer. What a wonderful and perplexing drink. The first time you try it ...
it's awful. Ughhh. How can anyone drink this stuff? Then you slowly 'acquire' your
taste for beer. It grows on you. Then before you know it, you come home on a hot summer
day and the first thing you want to relax with is a fresh, cold beer.
But where did beer come from? What's its history on this planet and how on earth did
someone come up with its invention? How many of you would let something sit for weeks
and ferment and then actually drink it??? Some historians believe that prehistoric
nomads made beer from grain and water before even knowing how to make bread (at least
they had they're priorities straight). The bible even says that beer was one of Noah's
provisions on the ark! Historians have found recipes for beer in clay tablets dating
back to the Babylonians of 4300 BC!!
Wherever and whenever it started remains to be seen but it looks like it'll be around
long after we're gone. In 1880, there were over 2300 breweries operation in the US. By
1914, competition had driven this number down to 1400. And when prohibition (who in the
hell was running our country then?) ended in 1933 (April 7 to be exact), only 160 breweries
survived. Whew ... now that was a close one. Now Microbrewing has taken on a new phase
in the late 1990's and home-brewing has become extremely popular. Now 1 in every 5 households
(I made that up) makes their own beer. Beer, or commonly referred to as Ale, is just one of
those things will will be cherished by us as long as we have taste buds.
