Webring?

What is the WebRing?

WebRing is a service providing one of the easiest ways for visitors to navigate the Web. Member web sites have banded together to form their sites into linked circles. Their purpose: to allow more visitors to reach them quickly and easily.

What is the Page-O-Stuff Ring?

The Page-O-Stuff Ring is exactly what it sounds like: A collection of sites devoted to stuff.

How does it work?

Each site in the ring has code added to it which will allow visitors to move from site to site. Exactly how, I don't know. I leave the technical stuff to the guys at WebRing. :)

Joining the Page-O-Stuff Ring

What are the requirements to join?

  • Your site must be named something to do with page of stuff!!
  • No pornographic sites will be accepted.
  • The Ringmaster determines final eligibility.

How do I join?

  • Complete the form labeled "Submit Your Site to the Page-O-Stuff Ring".
  • Save the email you receive. This contains your password. (You are now in the queue. If you take no other action, your site will be deleted from the queue in three weeks with no warning. So please continue on...)
  • Follow the link for the HTML fragment from the email. Copy and paste the fragment to your web site.
  • Save the Page-O-Stuff Ring Graphic to your server and load it as you would any other graphic.
  • Email the ringmaster (Tim) at [email protected] verifying the HTML is on your site. Please include the site id# you were issued.
  • You will receive another email when your site has been moved from the queue to the ring.

How long does it take?

It really depends. It doesn't take too long to fill out the signup form, to add the html fragment to your site, or to write a short email telling me all is ready. Once I get the email, I'll check your site to make sure everything is done correctly. Then I add you to the ring. If nothing is wrong, you can expect to be added in a few days.

The HTML Fragment

What is this HTML fragment you keep talking about?

The HTML fragment is code that you must add to your web site to be added to the Page-O-Stuff Ring. It consists of links that allow users to navigate the ring.

Why do I have to add it to my site?

If you don't, visitors will arrive at your site with no way to continue on. I don't want to have confused surfers.

What happens if I don't add the HTML fragment to my site?

You don't get added to the ring. Simple as that.

Ok, I'll add it. But I don't like the way it looks. Can I change it?

Umm, no. Again, confused users are bad. I don't want people to have to guess what it is going to look like on every site.

Alright, I won't change it. Can I add the HTML fragment whereever I want?

Yes and no. When you sign up, you register one URL, not your entire site. That one URL is the page visitors will enter your site. If you place the fragment on a different URL than the one you registered, it's as if you didn't add it at all. However, you can place the fragment whereever you want to on the URL you registered.

But what happens if I am a member of several rings already? Can I put them all on one page?

Again, you can place the fragment anywhere on the URL you registered. If you want to put all of your rings on a "ring page", then register that URL. However, if I were surfing around a ring and I came to a page with nothing but other ring links, you'd better believe I'm moving on, and fast.

The Page-O-Stuff Ring Graphic

Can I load the graphic from your server?

No. I get charged by my web host for excess traffic. If everyone in the ring loaded the graphic from my server, I would get charged for it, and I don't want that. Besides, if you save it to your server, it will probably load faster.

How do I save the graphic and load it from my server?

The Page-O-Stuff Ring Graphic
Right click on the graphic above and click "save as". Save it to wherever you want, and then load it as you would any other graphic on your site. You will have to modify the HTML fragment to point to the graphic stored on your server. Note: if you only have one mouse button (read Apple users), then I'm sorry but I can't help. My wife would kill me if I bought a Mac just to help you guys out.

Problems

I can't get the HTML fragment to work/look right. Can you help?

Chances are good you are using a WYSIWYG editor like MS Frontpage. I don't like or use these editors. So unfortunately I can't help. There should be a way to work with the raw html. Using this feature, you can cut and paste the HTML fragment and it should look ok. Remember also, if it looks right but doesn't work, that may just mean you haven't been added to the ring. You'll get an error message to this effect if that is the case.

I did everything but I haven't been added. What's wrong?

  • Is your site up and running? Is it accessable from MY browser? (I'm sorry, but if I can't get to your site, it won't get added)
  • Is your site about various stuff and named 'page of stuff' or something similar?
  • Did you copy the HTML fragment to your site? Did you verify it looks as it should?
  • Did you save the Page-O-Stuff Ring graphic and load it from your server?
  • Did you send me an email stating you added the HTML?
If the answers to all those questions are yes, then email me at [email protected] and I'll figure out what's wrong.

What do you mean, my site isn't right for the ring?

Unfortunately, I cannot accept all sites that apply. One of the main requirements is that your site be named 'page of stuff' or something similar. At last count, there are many many rings at WebRing, so if I don't accept your site, I'm sure there is another ring that will.
